The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) are two post-World War II alliances. NATO was formed in 1949 as a military alliance between the United States, Canada, and several European countries to protect against the threat of Soviet aggression. The OAS was established in 1948 as an intergovernmental organization to promote economic, social, and political cooperation among its member states in the Americas.
