Samuel MORSE was an American portraitist and inventor who is best known for his invention of the single-wire telegraph system, which laid the foundation for modern communication. He also developed the MORSE code, a system of dots and dashes that represent letters of the alphabet. MORSE was a prolific artist and painted many portraits of prominent figures in the United States. He was also a successful entrepreneur and founded the Magnetic Telegraph Company in 1845.
