Richard Byrd was a polar explorer who is best known for his expeditions to the Antarctic. He was an American naval officer and aviator, and he was also a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He made four expeditions to the Antarctic, during which he explored the area and conducted scientific research. He also made the first flight over the South Pole in 1929. His accomplishments earned him the title of 'Hero of the Air' and he was widely respected for his bravery and dedication to exploration.
