The Poet Laureate of 1700 was Nahum Tate, an Irish poet and playwright. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1692 and held the position until his death in 1715. Tate is best known for his revision of the Book of Psalms, which was used in the Church of England until the mid-19th century. He also wrote several plays, including the tragedy 'King Lear' and the comedy 'The History of King Richard II'. Tate's works are still studied today and he is remembered as one of the most influential poets of the 17th century.
