Van Cliburn was an American pianist who achieved worldwide recognition in 1958 when he won the first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at the age of 23. He was the first American to win the competition and his victory was a significant moment in the Cold War. Cliburn went on to have a successful career as a concert pianist, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras and conducting master classes around the world.
