Ernest Rutherford was a physicist and chemist from New Zealand who is known as the father of nuclear physics. He conducted pioneering research in the field of radioactivity, discovering the concept of radioactive half-life and the atomic nucleus. He also discovered the first artificial transmutation of elements and developed the Rutherford model of the atom. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his work on the structure of the atom.
