Peter Roget was a physician-turned-wordsmith who is best known for his thesaurus. He was born in London in 1779 and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating, he worked as a physician for several years before turning to writing. He wrote several books on language and published his famous thesaurus in 1852. His work has been widely used by writers and scholars ever since.
