Clara Barton was an American philanthropist, nurse, and humanitarian who founded the American Red Cross. She is best known for her work during the Civil War, where she provided medical care to wounded soldiers. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights and was the first woman to hold a government position. Barton was born in Massachusetts in 1821 and died in 1912. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997.
