William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia, was an English Quaker and real estate entrepreneur who was granted a royal charter for the Province of Pennsylvania in 1681. He established Philadelphia as the capital of the province and served as its governor from 1682 until his death in 1718. Penn's vision of religious freedom and tolerance helped to make Philadelphia one of the most diverse cities in the world.
