A LEPER is a person with leprosy, an infectious disease that causes severe disfigurement and nerve damage. Leprosy is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and is spread through contact with an infected person's nasal secretions. Symptoms of leprosy include skin lesions, numbness in the hands and feet, and muscle weakness. Treatment for leprosy includes antibiotics and surgery to correct disfigurement.
