Persian governors, also known as satraps, were appointed by the Persian Empire to govern its provinces. They were responsible for maintaining order and collecting taxes, and were often given military authority. Satraps were expected to be loyal to the Persian king and to follow his orders. They were usually members of the Persian nobility, and were given a great deal of autonomy in their provinces.
