Pericles was an ATHENIAN statesman and general who lived in the 5th century BCE. He is best known for his leadership during the Peloponnesian War, which saw Athens and its allies pitted against Sparta and its allies. He is also remembered for his role in the development of democracy in Athens, as well as his patronage of the arts and literature. He is considered one of the most influential figures in Western history.
