Pelting precipitation is a term used to describe a type of precipitation that falls in the form of small pieces, such as HAIL. HAIL is a form of precipitation that consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, which can range in size from pea-sized to golf ball-sized. It is created when strong updrafts of air carry water droplets high into the atmosphere where they freeze and become larger. When the updrafts can no longer support the weight of the hailstone, it falls to the ground.
