A SERF was a peasant in the Middle Ages who was bound to the land and required to provide labor services to a lord in exchange for protection and the use of land. A PEON is a person who is employed to do menial or unskilled work, often for low pay. Both serfs and peons are considered to be peasant workers, as they are employed in low-status jobs with little to no autonomy.
