Andrei Sakharov was a Soviet physicist, dissident, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He was an advocate for human rights and civil liberties in the Soviet Union and is widely considered to be one of the most important figures of the 20th century. Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975 for his efforts to promote peace and human rights. He was also a prominent figure in the development of the Soviet hydrogen bomb.
