The term 'Passenger Railway System' refers to AMTRAK, a publicly funded intercity passenger rail system in the United States. AMTRAK operates more than 300 trains daily on 21, 400 miles of track connecting more than 500 destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces. AMTRAK is the largest provider of intercity rail service in the United States and is the only one that receives federal operating subsidies. It is managed and operated by the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, a for-profit corporation established by Congress in 1971.
