The term 'Pal of Pythias' refers to the character DAMON from the Greek legend of DAMON and Pythias. DAMON was a loyal friend of Pythias, who was sentenced to death by Dionysius I of Syracuse. DAMON offered to take his place in prison so that Pythias could go home and settle his affairs before his execution. When Pythias returned to Syracuse, Dionysius was so impressed with DAMON's loyalty that he pardoned both men. DAMON and Pythias have become symbols of true friendship and loyalty.
