The outer layer of the brain is known as the CORTEX. It is composed of neurons and glial cells, and is responsible for higher-level functions such as sensory perception, motor commands, language, memory, and consciousness. The CORTEX is divided into four lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital. It is the most recently evolved part of the brain and is responsible for many of the complex behaviors that make us human.
