The old Portuguese currency was the Escudo, which was a six-letter word. The Escudo was the official currency of Portugal from 1911 until 2002, when it was replaced by the Euro. It was subdivided into 100 centavos and was available in both coins and banknotes. The Escudo was also used in the former Portuguese colonies of Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tome and Príncipe.
