NYASALAND, now known as Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. It was formerly a British protectorate known as the Nyasaland Protectorate, which was established in 1907 and dissolved in 1964. After its dissolution, it became the independent nation of Malawi. Malawi is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south and west. It is the ninth-smallest country in Africa and has a population of over 18 million people.
