Ann Radcliffe was an English novelist, one of the most popular of the Gothic novelists. She was born in London in 1764 and wrote her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne, in 1789. Her most famous work is The Mysteries of Udolpho, published in 1794. Radcliffe's novels were known for their suspenseful plots and vivid descriptions of nature. She died in 1823.
