The Norwegian explorer AMUNDSEN (8 letters) is best known for his successful expedition to the South Pole in 1911-1912. He was also the first to traverse the Northwest Passage in a ship. Another Norwegian explorer, Nansen (6 letters), is remembered for his pioneering work in oceanography and his attempt to reach the North Pole in 1895-1896. He was also the first to cross Greenland on skis. Both AMUNDSEN and Nansen are remembered as two of the greatest explorers of the 20th century.
