Eric the Red was a Norse explorer who is most famous for his role in the discovery and settlement of Greenland. He is believed to have been born in Norway around 950 AD and is thought to have sailed west from Iceland in 982 AD. He is credited with establishing the first Norse settlement in Greenland, which he named after himself. Eric the Red's son, Leif Erikson, is often credited as the first European to reach North America.
