Leon is Nicaragua's second-largest city, located in the northwest of the country. It is the capital of the department of León and was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. It is known for its colonial architecture, including the Cathedral of León, which is the largest cathedral in Central America. Leon is also home to the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, the oldest university in Central America.
