Ellis Island is a small island located in New York Harbor, which served as an immigration station from 1892 to 1954. It was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States and was the busiest immigrant inspection station in the nation. Ellis Island was named after Samuel Ellis, who owned the island in the 1770s. Today, it is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is open to the public.
