Native American homes were traditionally constructed from natural materials and included the TEPEE (also spelled teepee) and the WIGWAM. A TEPEE is a conical tent-like structure made of wooden poles covered with animal skins or woven mats. It was used by many Plains Indian tribes, such as the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Blackfoot. A WIGWAM is a domed structure made of wooden poles and covered with bark, grass, or animal skins. It was used by many Eastern Woodland tribes, such as the Iroquois, Algonquin, and Ojibwe. Both types of homes provided shelter from the elements and could be easily disassembled and moved when necessary.
