The National Council in the USSR was a legislative body established in 1990 as part of the SOVIET Union's transition to a more democratic system. It was also known as the Supreme SOVIET and was composed of two chambers, the SOVIET of the Union and the SOVIET of Nationalities. The term 'SOVIET' is derived from the Russian word for council. The National Council in the USSR was dissolved in 1991 following the dissolution of the SOVIET Union.
