The mythical queen of Thebes is Niobe, a figure from Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Tantalus and the wife of Amphion, the founder and king of Thebes. Niobe was proud of her fourteen children and boasted that she was superior to the goddess Leto, who only had two children. As punishment for her hubris, Apollo and Artemis killed all of Niobe's children. Niobe was so grief-stricken that she turned to stone and wept forever.
