The Muslim denomination of Shia is a branch of Islam that is based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and his family. It is the second largest denomination of Islam, after Sunni, and is practiced by approximately 10-15% of Muslims worldwide. Shia Muslims believe that the rightful successors to the Prophet Muhammad are his descendants, and they follow the teachings of the Imams, or spiritual leaders, who are descended from the Prophet's family.
