Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated population of 18.4 million as of 2011. Mumbai was originally a conglomeration of seven islands on the Konkan coast which were ceded by the Portuguese to England as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza in 1661. The islands were subsequently leased to several British East India Company officials during the mid-18th century. In 1995, the city was officially renamed from Bombay to Mumbai.
