The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution that would guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex. It was first introduced in Congress in 1923 and has been reintroduced in every session since then. The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification. Mrs. America Legislation was a campaign launched in 1975 to promote the ratification of the ERA. The campaign was led by Phyllis Schlafly, who opposed the ERA, and her organization, Stop ERA. The campaign was successful in preventing the ERA from being ratified.
