Mr. Doubleday is a reference to ABNER Doubleday, an American Civil War veteran and Union Army officer who is widely credited with inventing the game of baseball. He was born in 1819 in Ballston Spa, New York and died in 1893 in Mendham, New Jersey. He served in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, and was promoted to the rank of major general in 1865. After the war, he became a businessman and was involved in several railroad companies. He is remembered for his contribution to the game of baseball, which he is said to have invented in 1839.
