Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic NUN and missionary who dedicated her life to helping the poor. She was born in 1910 in what is now Macedonia and joined the Sisters of Loreto at age 18. She took her vows in 1931 and changed her name to Mother Teresa. She spent most of her life in India, where she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The organization has since grown to include over 4, 000 sisters and hundreds of thousands of volunteers. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work with the poor.
