The term 'Mother of Calcutta' refers to the late Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor and sick in India. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in what is now Macedonia and moved to India in 1929, where she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2016.
