Monte Irvin is a former Major League Baseball player who played for the Newark Eagles, New York Giants, and Chicago Cubs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 and is known as one of the greatest players of the Negro Leagues. He was born in Haleburg, Alabama in 1919 and was nicknamed 'The Baron' for his regal bearing. Irvin was a powerful hitter and an excellent fielder, and he was also known for his leadership skills. He was a key member of the Giants' 1951 National League championship team and was named to the All-Star team four times. After retiring from baseball, Irvin worked in the commissioner's office and served as a special assistant to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.
