Montana's capital is Helena, a city of approximately 30, 000 people located in the western part of the state. Helena was founded in 1864 during the Montana gold rush and was named after the daughter of a miner. It became the capital of Montana in 1875 and has remained so ever since. Helena is known for its historic downtown area, which includes many 19th century buildings, as well as its proximity to the Rocky Mountains.
