Monica Seles is a former professional tennis player from Yugoslavia, who was one of the most successful female athletes of the 1990s. She won nine Grand Slam singles titles and was ranked World No. 1 in 1991 and 1992. Seles was known for her aggressive style of play and her powerful two-handed backhand. In 1993, she was the victim of an on-court attack by a deranged fan, which forced her to take a two-year break from the sport. After her return, she won the 1996 Australian Open and reached the final of the US Open in 1998.
