Monastic jurisdiction, also known as an abbacy, is a term used to describe the authority of a religious superior over a monastery or other religious house. An abbacy is typically held by an abbot or abbess, who is responsible for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the members of the religious house. The abbot or abbess is also responsible for the administration of the monastery's finances and property.
