Minnesota's Ilhan Omar is a Somali-American politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. She is the first Somali-American, the first naturalized citizen from Africa, and the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. Omar was born in Somalia and spent her early years in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States at the age of 12. She is a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party and the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
