It is the smallest island nation in the world, with a population of around 11, 000 people. Palau is an archipelago of over 500 islands located in the western Pacific Ocean, north of Indonesia. It has a population of around 21, 000 people. Both countries are part of the larger Micronesia region, which includes other island nations such as Guam, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
