The Menotti character Amahl is a young shepherd boy who appears in the one-act opera 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' by Gian Carlo Menotti. The opera tells the story of Amahl's encounter with the Three Kings on their way to Bethlehem. Amahl is a poor but generous boy who offers his crutch to the kings as a gift for the newborn baby Jesus. The opera was first performed in 1951 and has since become a Christmas classic.
