Charles Babbage was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer who is best known for his invention of the first mechanical computer. He is often referred to as the 'father of the computer' and his work laid the foundation for modern computing. Babbage is also credited with inventing the first calculating machine, which he called the Difference Engine. His work in mathematics and engineering was highly influential in the development of modern computing.
