Marcel Marceau, for one, was a French MIME and pantomimist. He is widely considered to be the most famous MIME of all time, and is credited with popularizing the art form in the 20th century. He was known for his character Bip, a white-faced clown who wore a striped pullover and carried a cane. Marceau's performances often focused on silence and the use of gesture to convey emotion. He was also an accomplished actor, appearing in films such as Mel Brooks' Silent Movie and Barbra Streisand's The Main Event.
