Marathons, e.g. are long-distance running RACES that typically cover a distance of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles). They are usually organized as an annual event and are one of the most popular forms of long-distance running. Marathons have been around since ancient times and were first held in Greece in 490 BC. Today, marathons are held all over the world and attract thousands of participants each year. The term 'MARATHON' is derived from the legend of Pheidippides, who ran from the town of MARATHON to Athens to deliver news of a Greek victory over the Persians in 490 BC.
