An EMBANKMENT is a long artificial mound, typically made of earth or stone, that is built to contain or divert water, protect against flooding, or provide a road or railway bed. It is usually constructed along the course of a river, lake, or other body of water, and can also be used to protect coastal areas from the sea. Embankments are often used to prevent erosion and to create a barrier between two bodies of water.
