The term 'COPPERHEAD' refers to a group of Northern Democrats during the American Civil War who opposed the war and wanted an immediate peace settlement with the Confederate States. They were also known for their strong support of President Abraham Lincoln, whose portrait appears on the Lincoln Cent.
