Leaps in ice-skating are a type of jump performed by figure skaters. The most common type of leap is the axel, which is a jump that requires the skater to take off from a forward outside edge and rotate one and a half times in the air before landing on the same backward outside edge. This jump is considered the most difficult of all the jumps and is named after its inventor, Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen.
