An axel is a figure skating jump in which the skater takes off from the back outside edge of one foot, rotates in the air, and lands on the back outside edge of the opposite foot. It was first performed by the Polish figure skater Wojciech Fortuna in 1962, and later popularized by the American figure skater Janet Lynn in 1972. The axel was named after the Swedish figure skater Axel Paulson, who invented the jump in 1882.
