The Kuwaiti Chief is known as the EMIR, which is a four-letter word. The EMIR is the head of state and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Kuwait. He is also the chairman of the Supreme Council of Planning and Development, and the president of the Supreme Petroleum Council. The EMIR is responsible for appointing the Prime Minister and the cabinet, and for approving laws passed by the National Assembly.
