The Kontiki Vessel was a RAFT made of balsa wood and other native materials, designed and built by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl in 1947. The RAFT was used to prove Heyerdahl's theory that ancient people from South America could have settled Polynesia. The RAFT was named Kontiki after the Inca sun god and sailed for 101 days across the Pacific Ocean before reaching its destination in Polynesia.
